Throughout undergrad, I worked as a personal trainer in various gyms including Gold’s Gym, The University of Calgary’s Sports Medicine Centre, and University Fitness Centre. Once I started to develop my niche of working with rehabilitation patients, which started with cardiac rehab patients as well as several post-surgical ACL patients, I wanted to obtain more knowledge and certifications related to training. I had some experience with high-level athletic training from my time training with the Dinos football team, so I started networking with some of the University Strength Coaches. Very quickly, I realized that the gold standard for working with high-level athletes was the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Certification (NSCA-CSCS). I was drawn to this not only because of the esteem it held within the high-level sport, but also because it was an evidence-based application of knowledge to improve athletic performance. I earned my CSCS in 2010 while completing my Masters in Sports Science. This certification helped to fine-tune my exercise prescription, especially for preparing patients for return to play from various injuries. I have maintained this certification ever since, taking continuing education courses that focus on athletic preparation and nutrition. I try to use these clinical skills to help offset my chiropractic training and provide rehabilitation and exercise advice to facilitate earlier return to play decisions.
WHAT IS CERTIFIED STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING?
"Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists® (CSCS®) are professionals who apply scientific knowledge to train athletes for the primary goal of improving athletic performance. They conduct sport-specific testing sessions, design and implement safe and effective strength training and conditioning programs, and provide guidance regarding nutrition and injury prevention. Recognizing that their area of expertise is separate and distinct, CSCSs consult with and refer athletes to other professionals when appropriate.”
"The NSCA exists to empower a community of professionals to maximize their impact through disseminating evidence-based knowledge and its practical application by offering industry-leading certifications, research journals, career development services, networking opportunities, and continuing education. The NSCA community is composed of more than 60,000 members and certified professionals throughout the world who further industry standards as researchers, educators, strength and conditioning coaches, performance and sports scientists, personal trainers, tactical professionals, and other related roles.”
